Jumping Spiders And Their Kind: Classification & Evolution

Jumping spiders (Araneae: Salticidae) appear relatively late in the fossil record as compared to other spider families. While the oldest salticid fossils (~45Ma) have been found in Europe those recovered in the New World are younger (~20Ma) with the majority preserved in Dominican amber from the Miocene. This fossil record along with recent research on the relationships of various living jumping spider groups provides an overview of their phylogeny relative to arachnids in general as well as to the history of life on Earth.
