Pelegrina (F. Balboa, 1930)

Pelegrina proterva (Walckenaer, 1837)

NA Range Map
Salticidae of North America
Richman, Cutler & Hill 2012

While the field marks of both the male and the female shown in the first part of the video (00:00-01:08) are consistent with Pelegrina proterva, confirming this identification would require having the specimen in hand to see the details of the male’s pedipalp and the female’s epigynum. Because the spiders were video-taped in Massachusetts, both P. insignis and P. peckhamorum are possibilities. The second male jumper (begins at 01:10) as well as the immature spider that follows were video-taped in Racine, WI. While P. insignis is a possibility in Wisconsin, the lack of yellow markings on the abdomen eliminate this species and allow for a positive identification (by W.M) as Pelegrina proterva. Warning! Don’t try this at home. While there is nothing wrong with an educated guess (and given the pitfalls to narrowing this identification to species), for most of us that is what it should remain – an informed guess not a confirmation.
DeVries, 2002-2007; Maddison, pers. comm. 2011 *Records for P. proterva, P. insignis, and P. peckhamorum are from Maddison’s 1996 revision- Pelegrina Franganillo and other jumping spiders formerly placed in the genus Metaphidippus (Araneae: Salticidae). Bulletin of the Museum of Comparative Zoology, Harvard 154: 215-368.
