A rich variety of non-apoid wasps are commonly seen in association with and in the same or similar habitats as the "solitary wasps." Indeed many of these species are the insects that most people think of when they hear the word "wasp." Whether yellow jackets, those unwelcome visitors to our picnics, paper wasps, regular inhabitants of our homes or bald-faced hornets, with their nests hanging from backyard trees, these are the wasps in the public imagination. In 1956, one non-apoid wasp -a member of the spider wasp group, was briefly thrust into stardom by Disney in the role of Pepsis, the Tarantula Killer. For the naturalist an overview of the various groups provides a wider context for understanding the life hisories of wasps in general and the solitary wasps' place among the hymenoptera.
